The Kettle Mountain State Forest-Lapham Peak Unit provides 17 miles of cross-country skiing trails. These include a 2.5-mile trail with lighted lighting and snowmaking tools. You can skate or stride on the trails.

Located just south of Delafield, Lapham Peak is one of the most popular Wisconsin parks for winter sports. It is an ideal place to picnic, birdwatch or play on a scenic lake. There are three picnic areas, an amphitheater and prairie restoration area. The park has over 25 miles of nature trails.

The 45-foot observation tower is located at Waukesha County’s highest point. This park is ideal for skiing, hiking, and backpacking. The glaciated topography also offers a variety of other activities like ice fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, sailing and dog sled racing.

Lapham Peak is the only Wisconsin DNR property with snowmaking for cross country skiing, covering a 1.5 km loop called the 'Man-Made Snow Trail' and a 4 kilometer loop lit for night skiing. The snowmaking facility is open from November to April and is supported by donations from supporters.

The ski area is operated by the Friends of Lapham Peak (FLP). There are three areas for picnicking, a campground, an interpretive center and a visitor center that provides information about the Kettle Moraine State Forest's natural and environmental conservation programs. The park is available from 7 am to 9 p.m. in winter, and closes at 5.pm on Sundays.

Cross country skiing is a very popular sport in this park. This park offers a variety of terrain and is one of the most visited cross-country ski facilities in southern Wisconsin.

For advanced skiers, there is a large training area with views over the Cascades.

Hoodoo Ski Area at Santiam Pass has 18 kilometers of cross country ski trails. It's also great for snowshoeing or ice fishing.

The Willamette Pass Ski Area has 20 kilometers of groomed ski trails.

Many miles of cross-country skiing trails are available in Ochoco National Forest East of Bend. Bandit Springs Trail: This is a very popular one.

Another popular location for cross country skiing is Wyalusing State Park in the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The trails are lit, and there are open water lakes that can be used to ice fish. There is also a 45-foot observation tower and a picnic area.
