Cross-country skiing in Wisconsin is a wonderful way to get fit, or simply to enjoy the outdoors. The state has hundreds of miles and dozens of ski trails. Many are either marked for traditional skiing or are groomed for skate skiing.

Waterloo Valley Trails, Upper Peninsula of Wisconsin, offer beautiful areas to ski. There are many different types of ski trails to choose from, and a variety of levels of difficulty.

Mohonk Mountain (PDF)

Mohonk Mountain makes a great cross-country skiing destination. It offers both cross-country and snowshoeing opportunities, as well as a stunning view of the natural landscape.

Cranbrook & Blue Mound States Parks (PDF)

Both of these parks have excellent cross-country ski trails that are perfect for beginners and experts alike. These trails take you through a variety of terrain, from steep mountains to rolling hills.

Timm's Hill Ski Trail (15 minutes by car) is Wisconsin's highest point with miles and miles of groomed trail rated from beginner through advanced. Minocqua Winter Park, 30 minutes away by car, has 30 miles of trails, and Rib Lake Ski and Snowshoe Trails are close to Timm's Hill and part of the Ice Age Trail.

Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area - PDF

The Nine Mile Chalet offers ski rentals, daily ski passes and a warming area during the season. During the open hours of the chalet, cash, check and card payments are accepted.

The Birkie Cross-Country Ski Trail System in Wisconsin, between Hayward & Cable, draws a wide variety of cross-country skiers to take part in the Birkie, North America's largest cross-country ski marathon.

Justin Trails Resort, near Sparta, has its own network on 200 acres that offers cross country skiing. It is close to Wildcat Mountain State Park as well as the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. The Black River State Forest makes it an ideal cross-country skiing spot for both families and groups.

Crosby Creek State Park just south from Madison has great trails that can be used to do both traditional and skating. Many trails are lit for night skiing.

Moose Woods State Park is located just outside of Sparta and has over 40 miles of trails. This park is a popular spot for skiers. This trail system is a favorite for beginner and experienced skiers alike, with a variety of loops to suit your skill level.
