Olympic Alpine Skiing Events

alpine skiing equipment list

Alpine skiing is one the few sports that has been included in every Winter Olympics. This sport requires speed and technical skills, which can make it very expensive.

Despite all of the challenges, skiing is still a popular sport among people of all ages. Alpine skiing requires patience and practice, unlike freestyle skiing which is more about acrobatics mid-air.

It is a sport that has many athletes. But, the Winter Olympic Games are the most famous. There are six Olympic alpine skiing events: super-G (downhill), giant slalom (giant slalom), super-G (combined and mixed team parallel ski slalom).

Downhill

This is the longest and hardest of all alpine ski events. The vertical drop for men is 800-1100m, and for women it's 450-800m. Athletes can only ski down a single course so they must aim to reach the top in the shortest time.

Slalom

The shortest and most technical of all the alpine skiing events, slalom has gates that are spaced closely together. This allows for precise turns and a fast race.

Or they will be disqualified. Competitors must pass each gate within a specified time. The slalom is a two-run competition, and eliminations are based on times.

Giant slalom

Similar to slalom but with a longer distance, giant (or "super-") slalom requires that skiers pass through each gate in the given time. Since 1936, this event has been part of every Winter Olympics.

Super-G

Another speed event, super-G is a combination of downhill and ski slalom. You can't miss any gate.

Combination

Combining a downhill and an slalom, this is the first alpine ski event to be added in the Olympics. The combined run with the fastest aggregate time determines the winner.

Founded in 1924, the FIS is the governing body of the sport and governs it worldwide. It is also an umbrella organization that governs cross-country skiing and ski jumping.

The World Championships are contested by its 136 member nations.

Although alpine skiing has increased in popularity at the Olympics, the sport remains dominated by Alpine skiers. Austria holds a commanding lead in total medals and gold medals.

There are total of 138 national skiing federations who compete at the World Championships. Many of them have strong programs. France, Canada (including those that have won gold or silver medals at Olympics), are the top-ranked nations in the world.

The United States has an impressive presence at the Olympics. American Mikaela Schiffrin, who earned her first gold medal at these Games in 2014, will likely win another. She currently ranks second in world alpine skiing and has won four World Cup races. Petra Vlhova (Slovakia) will likely join her in Beijing. She has been competing with Shiffrin over many years and is widely considered the best slalom-skier in the entire world.

Last but not the least, you will need a flashlight as well as insect repellent, sunscreens, sunglasses, a hat, first aid kits, and sunblock.

Guesthouses look and feel similar to hostels except that there are often more people in each room.

These beds and breakfasts are very well-liked by budget-conscious travelers. Guests can stay in their own private homes and have a full breakfast included in their stay.

What can I do to make travelling more enjoyable?

Traveling should not just be about getting from point A to B. It should also include all the experiences along the way.

We created "Traveler", an app that allows you to plan your trip by creating itineraries according to your interests.

We are currently working to add more features, such as booking flights, hotels, and renting cars.

The concept behind this project is to create a simple, yet effective travel planning tool for travelers who want more while on vacation.
